What do I register for?
Bands at Zion-Benton are ability based. This means that students with more experience are grouped together in order to perform music that is of appropriate difficulty. One of the issues that occurs with registration is that we are required to submit course requests in February, however we continue our growth as musicians throughout the rest of the semester. As a result, we have come up with this solution in order to place the bands as accurately as possible (by waiting until the absolute latest time to submit the final "band list"), but having course requests in place so we know who is doing band and how many staffing/ensembles we need to have.
All students register for band in February like they would their other courses. Please follow the instructions below for registering:
1.) All current Sophomores and Juniors (2016-17) should register for VP733 Symphonic Band.
2.) All Freshmen who are currently in Symphonic Band should register for VP733 Symphonic Band.
3.) All other Freshmen should register for VP732 Concert Band Level 2 (Concert Band).
4.) All current 8th graders (2016-17) should register for VP730 Concert Band Level 1 (Varsity Band).
5.) All percussionists, regardless of year in school, should register for VP731 Percussion
So is this the band I am going to be in next year?
Not necessarily. We will audition all students for band placement near the end of April. By having students registered in this pattern, we will minimize the number of schedule changes that need to occur. We wait this late for auditions so we can get the most accurate representation of your playing ability. We change the schedules. You do not need to check in with Student Services to make sure these changes are appropriately made.
How do I sign up for Marching Band? Basketball Band? Jazz Band?
Marching Band is a co-curricular component of the band program at ZBTHS. All students participate and receive PE Waiver credit for doing so. Marching Band is non-competitive so there are no Saturday/Sunday commitments throughout the year. The Marching Zee-Bees perform at all home football games. Once school is in session in August, the prime focus of band class is concert band. Marching Band music is rehearsed once a week in order to "retain" what is learned in band camp.
Pep Band ("basketball band") is another co-curricular component of the band program. Each year the band performs at 8-10 home varsity basketball games. We split the band up into two smaller groups which then each covers 4 or 5 games throughout the season. This design offers a great deal of flexibility within the group if someone needs to miss a game.
Jazz Band is an extra-curricular offering that meets after school once Marching Band finishes. The schedule of the group is determined by the availability of the membership.
